How I got over
How I Got Over is an ongoing series by Sofie Middernacht, originally developed in collaboration with Maarten Alexander.
The works are created from decommissioned underground diesel and oil tanks - industrial vessels that once lay buried beneath homes for decades before being excavated as part of the transition away from fossil fuels. What was once hidden underground and destined for disposal becomes the foundation for sculptural, functional objects.
Years beneath the earth have left the steel marked by corrosion, traces of tar and layers of soil. Rather than removing these signs of time, Middernacht carefully preserves them beneath layers of epoxy, allowing the material's history to remain visible. The resulting surfaces reveal a rich, unpredictable palette that cannot be replicated.
Every piece is unique. The original condition of each tank, together with the combination of pigments and epoxy, creates an object with its own texture, colour and character—a singular record of transformation.
